Steve Frazier & Pete Sholander were good enough to show me down Overflow for my first time in early 1995. It was cold, which turned out to be a good thing. In Seven Car Pileup, below Bushwacker, I clipped a rock with my right hand and had a diagonal break on my pinky metacarpal. The water was cold, so that helped keep the swelling down. The cold and adrenaline kept the pain at bay, most of the time… You can paddle with just 3 fingers. But the brace at the bottom of Singley’s hurt pretty bad. It also hurt taking off my Barney the Dinosaur non-Goretex dry suit. Better equipment and better paddling came later!
