April 10, 1997 – Gauley was running 400cfs, so we headed South and decided to run the Green for our first time. Hereafter known as Don’s Disaster, which confirmed him as the King of Karnage. Now there were some mitigating circumstances…
The Green was only 60%, which is pretty boney by our standards.
Our guide seems to have lysdexia… He’d point left and say “boof right”.
Don was paddling a Dagger Cascade C1 Flintstones style log.
It started with Bride of Frankenstein, when Don pinned and nearly was stuffed in the undercut. Lost his first paddle there. After blowing the ferry after carrying Zwicks, he nearly swam Chief and lost his spare paddle, so I let him use mine. Then sometime below the Dirty Dozen, he lost the 3rd paddle (my spare). But we found it a couple rapids later. Another swim in Toilet Bowl almost including Hammer Factor and we were off, 5 hours later, with one very sore & tired Don. I wish I had video of the swims, but I was busy with a rope!
