October 14, 1997 – This was the first time down for Don & Milt. Steve Frazier had done it for a couple years by then. Joe Greiner persuaded us to time the first Annual Russell Fork Downriver Race (now called Lord of the Fork). He gave us a couple of synced stopwatches, told us to find a finish line near Climax and sent us on our way. After a slow, hours long journey down the river, we set up to time it. We figured it would take 30 minutes or so for the racers. We were having a safety meeting when Jeff Snyder blew by us in a Wavehopper. We had to yell to stop him, since he didn’t know when he was done either. He ran the river in about 12 minutes…
But that’s also why I didn’t have the camera out for the finishers.
